What is SPF and how can it help protect you from skin damage? SPF, or Sun Protection Factor, measures the effectiveness of protection from UVB rays, which can cause sunburn, skin damage, or worse, skin cancer. For example, if your skin is prone to burning after 10 minutes in the sun and you are applying a SPF 15 sunscreen, it is recommended that you stay in the sun no longer than 150 minutes before reapplying. Staying in the sun for longer will increase your chances of UVB exposure. The rule of thumb is to multiply the amount of time it takes your skin to burn in the sun by the SPF number. The best way to stay protected is to reapply every two hours.
A common misconception about sunscreen is that it only needs to be applied in the summer. However, applying sunscreen should never be limited to summer use. Not only does daily sunscreen use shield your skin from the sun’s UVB rays year round, but it can also help you in other ways:
If you are looking for an alternative to sunscreen, try washing your clothes in a UV-repellent laundry detergent, wearing a wide-brimmed hat and protecting your eyes with sunglasses that block out UVA and UVB rays. Remember to watch for reflective surfaces, as they can increase your chances of sunburn. It’s also recommended that you protect your lips with a balm or gloss that contains SPF. Without lip protection, you are at risk of developing lip inflammation, which can result in dry, rough, scaly lesions ranging in size.
